Antique German Faturan Bakelite damari Prayer beads Necklace 209.3g 34 Amber
18mm to 25mm bead diameter. The beads are carved from an early resin that is likely Faturan. Created in Germany to approximate amber, Faturan was carved into beads and traded to countries like Yemen in the middle east to create traditional jewelry. These beads are stunning in their own right. Colors from cherry amber, butterscotch and egg yolk as well as well as mixed, with veins and occlusions are featured in this necklace. Very organic with no two beads alike in shape or color. And a beautiful warm glow. They are very glossy smooth, but when these beads warm up they take on a slightly different texture. Five large round beads are featured at the center of this long necklace, in the prettiest colors, separated by ornate metal findings that are probably low grade silver. I find a touch of verdi gris in the heavily patinated intricate cannetllle work.
The central beads are flanked by 10 round beads of various colors on each side, then three olive shaped, all separated by a small cannetille finding. It is finished with a spring ring closure and strung on double thread of some kind. Personally, because of the age I would have it restrung, but it is original and seems sound. It is dramatic and fascinating and not something that is made any more.
A rare find with a lot of personality as well as glowing color and texture that really grow on you. Feel free to ask questions and thank you for looking!
